Fitalent, the talent investment fund that is part of the everis multinational consulting group, the “Real de Vellón” fund managed by Clave Mayor, Geiser Pharma and Galenicum has invested in the biotechnology company called AzureBio, owned by the brothers Arcadio and Pedro Garcia de Castro. The investment has been carried out through a capital increase of € 800,000.
AzureBio, founded in 2007, specializes in applying new stabilization technologies for drugs and biomaterials to solve problems or meet needs in the field of human health. AzureBio is currently developing two projects. One is called "Injectable Needles," which is a system of administration of drugs and vaccines from biodegradable solid needles containing the active ingredient which can be administered subcutaneously using simple devices injectors. The project "Injection Needles" allows us to develop vaccines that could be administered to the patient through a simple disposable device in accordance with the World Health Organization (WHO) standards. This system would replace conventional needles and syringes and avoid the need for cold storage, reconstitution with sterile water, handling and reuse of hypodermic needles and the need for technical personnel to administer the medication.
Such a system is especially useful in poor countries where resources are limited. Today, childhood immunizations are an important global market estimated at several billion euros (between €1,000-€5,000 million by type of vaccine.) All immunization programs have an urgent need for improvement to facilitate administration and avoid potential infections associated with reuse of needles.
"There is no doubt that this new technology, once implemented, will extend, improve and streamline the preventive system in developing countries, which will help to reduce mortality and morbidity in these countries," said the general director of AzureBio, Arcadio García de Castro.
The company is working also in other project is "Synthetic Bone", which is basically a synthetic matrix of bone regeneration using phosphate and silicate. In addition, AzureBio offers "design services" to third parties for the administration of active ingredients and "Product stabilization” of reagents for use in diagnosis and treatment of samples with biological activity.
“The move to work with AzureBio is a strategic step and a major challenge given the size of projects of this biotech company," commented Fitalent managers and everis partners, Carlos Mendez and Alberto Garrido.
