Friday, 01 October, 2021

NTT DATA, a global digital business and IT services leader, today joined the Green Software Foundation, an organization devoted to reducing CO2 emissions caused by software, as a Steering Member. NTT DATA strives to formulate and promote global standards on software and system development that address climate change by working toward carbon neutrality.

NTT DATA’s Green Innovation Activities

NTT DATA has developed its “NTT DATA Carbon-Neutral Vision 2050” as part of its efforts to ensure that society will achieve carbon neutrality. Through the advancement of “Green Innovation,” NTT DATA will contribute to efforts seeking to realize carbon neutrality for society, not just for NTT DATA, via the utilization of digital technologies and joint development with its clients.

This alliance reinforces our commitment for the coming years to be carbon neutral and contribute to the sustainable development goals and the United Nations 2030 agenda. During the last year we have managed to reduce the company´s carbon footprint steadily. Thanks to technological solutions that allow our professionals to telecommute, provide service to our clients, and therefore reduce the impact on the climate ", says Maria Jesús Villa, everis ESG Director.

According to Alonso Dominguez, Green Deal - Global Partner in Innovative, Digital & Sustainable Transformation in everis – NTT DATA: “we count with a Technological Business Units specialized in the design of intelligent algorithms using AI that optimizes energy consumption in computing, being able to help companies achieving to be a Carbon Neutral Company. The Infrastructure BU also works on the design of energy-efficient Data Centers, promoting cloud infrastructure and the optimization of hardware resources. Always regarding environmental costs, NTT Data has developed its own BlockChain IT infrastructure, capable of maintaining full functionality, while minimizing the number of required Virtual Machines, and therefore the solution´s CO2 footprint”.

Joining the Green Software Foundation

As a measure to further advance Green Innovation, NTT DATA joined the Green Software Foundation as a Steering Member on September 16, 2021.

The Green Software Foundation is a non-profit organization jointly founded in May 2021 by the Linux Foundation, in collaboration with four companies: Accenture, GitHub, Microsoft, and Thoughtworks. This organization has set as its goal “a 45% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in the ICT industry by 2030,” a benchmark set via the Paris Agreement, and is working to achieve its mission of establishing the development standards and development tool best practices necessary to reduce CO2 emissions caused by software (green software development) and disseminating these standards and tools throughout the industry.

Future Initiatives

“By joining the Green Software Foundation, we believe we will be able to apply our leading R&D efforts and system development expertise to working group discussions to enhance the formulation of green specifications for globally standard software,” said Yo Honma, Representative Director, President and Chief Executive Officer, NTT DATA. “Furthermore, we will assertively propose, and take the lead on, developing mechanisms for calculating CO2 emissions volumes produced by software development.”

“Joining this organization allows us to enhance our impact toward development of a sustainable society and contribute to achieving the carbon neutrality goals set in NTT DATA’s Carbon-Neutral Vision 2050. The results we realize through these activities will not only help reduce environmental burdens caused during operation of client environments, but they will also benefit society through social infrastructure applications.”
